How to Avoid the #1 Career Mistake Not Having a Mentor We talk about mentors a lot- from softball coaches to swimming trainers to a high school teacher. When we are growing up, almost every adult could be considered a mentor for one reason or another. But many times when we enter the workforce, the general idea seems to be that our training is finished and we no longer need a mentor. Unfortunately, this is a huge mistake. Our success in the business world can be directly connected to whether or not we have a mentor. Having a career mentor can help us continue to grow, to make better business decisions, to find our career direction, and give us the motivation we need. The following tips can help you to avoid this mistake and find a mentor to help you be successful in your field. Look for a mentor program within your company. Many companies offer a mentor program, but it may not be advertised. Check with work mates who have been with the company for a while to see if there is anyone available to mentor. However, keep in mind that the person with the most seniority in your current company may not be the best choice for a mentor. Find someone who can help you with your career goals, who you respect and can look up to as a good example. If you are a woman, your mentor doesnt necessarily have to be a woman, and the same is true with men. Action tip: Take some time to think about what you would like to learn and in what areas you would most benefit from having a mentor. Now think about who could help you the most in those areas in your current company and ask them if they would be willing to be your mentor, explaining to them the qualities you admire and the things you want to learn from them. Take your mentoring relationship seriously. If you want to have a mentor, you have to be serious about keeping in touch with them regularly to benefit from their wisdom and expertise. Many choose to make a formal agreement to help both parties take their new relationship seriously. Make a schedule together and stick to it. Decide together whether you will meet weekly, monthly or something else based on your goals. Otherwise, you mentor will probably feel that he could have chosen a different, more appreciative person to mentor. Remember that having a mentor is an asset and view them as your biggest supporter. Create a list of three people you respect that have qualities you would benefit from learning. As massive jobs site Monster.com said in a recent feature story, winter is the time of year when the greatest number of decision makers are in the office at the same time, because these key people are done with the vacations so many of them take during the winter holidays. And this is important, because these decision makers often work as teams when making hiring choices. At the same time, January is when office work at many companies tends to pick up again after a slowdown in December. Some companies still mostly shut down during the last two weeks of the year. These firms won’t be making any hiring decisions around the holidays. Then the best time to get your resume out there would be right after the New Year’s holiday, when hiring managers are back at work and no longer thinking of holiday parties, gift-giving, and ski vacations. The Early Fall Rush The beginning of the new year isn’t the only good time to start a job search. The best time to look for a new job is often when you make the decision to take on a new challenge, no matter what time of year it happens to be. And the best time to job-hunting might also be when your life has slowed down enough. If you’re in the middle of moving to a new home, if you’re planning a wedding, or if you’ve returned to graduate school, this might not be the best time to hunt for a new job, even if it is early fall or the beginning of a new year. The online panel was sponsored by Capital One and featured CEOs who shared their perspectives and personal experiences with transformative concepts, including how their revolutionary attitudes enabled them to identify gaps in their industries that led to them helping their customers reimagine the way they live every day. While I enjoyed all of the QA, there was one question that I found especially powerful for today’s professional: What kind of food for thought or tips do you have for people trying to reimagine themselves? Here’s what they had to say: Wombi Rose, CEO Of Lovepop: It’s becoming easier and easier to do what you love. It’s not necessarily about launching a platform/business for everybody. It’s about knowing who you are and what you get excited about and figuring out how to do that. Once you’ve identified what you care about, that’s what you should throw yourself into. It’s a purpose-driven philosophy. Dave McLaughlin, CEO of WeWork: Even if the thing that you love failed, you wind up building knowledge and a skillset that makes you valuable to someone else. If youre not ready to start your own blog, try writing and publishing long-form posts from your LinkedIn profile instead. 2. Create a websiteCreating a website sounds like huge production, but it doesnt have to be. There are many free and easy website-creation programs out there just Google free websites or free website creation and youll get a list. A couple of my favorites are Wix and Weebly. You dont need anything complicated, probably just 1-3 pages the site will house your blog and any other information you want to post such as news and client testimonials. You could even create a Facebook page or use your LinkedIn profile for your website. Whatever you use, keep the site updated. Your website is your digital marketing hublink all your social media posts back to it and you will send all potential employers there. You dont want to promote stale material.3. Post to social mediaThis is the shout-out parte of your digital marketing. You have to be outspoken and engagi ng here, but not scream. How? Use keywords and awesome content to promote yourself. Make sure you use hashtags that are specific to the post and specific to your industry on every post. And link back to your website.Heres the tricky part Not all social media platforms will serve you well. This varies by industry. You have to choose which information goes on which platform and if you should be using that platform at all.For example, if you are an architect, you might use Pinterest, Instagram, and Tumblr because those platforms are based on visual content. If youre a book editor, youll want to use sites like Reddit or Tumblr. If you mainly provide B2B services, LinkedIn would probably be your main platform.
